The most dangerous thing for a homeowner isn’t the leak that pours water into the living room; it’s the hidden damage that quietly compromises the structural integrity of the home over 6 to 18 months. One of the most overlooked signs of storm damage is excessive granule loss. Shingles are coated with ceramic granules that serve a vital purpose: they protect the underlying asphalt from the sun’s harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays.
When heavy rain or hail hits a roof, it knocks these granules loose. If you see what looks like “shingle sand” accumulating at the bottom of your downspouts after a storm, your roof has just lost years of its life. Without those granules, the asphalt becomes brittle, cracks under the Louisiana heat, and eventually allows water to seep through the matting.
Hail doesn’t always break a shingle. In fact, most hail in the Baton Rouge area is small enough that it simply “bruises” the shingle.
A bruise is a dark spot where the granules have been pressed into the asphalt mat. To an untrained eye, it looks like a natural variation in the shingle color. However, if you press on that spot, it will feel soft—like the skin of an overripe peach. That softness indicates that the fiberglass mat inside the shingle has been fractured. Over the next several thermal cycles, that fracture will expand, creating a direct path for water to enter your attic.
You don’t need 100 mph winds to damage a roof. Sustained winds of 50–60 mph—common in our afternoon thunderstorms—can create “wind uplift.”
Wind can get underneath the edge of a shingle and lift it just enough to break the factory sealant strip. The shingle then drops back down into place, looking perfectly normal from the ground. However, the seal is broken. The next time it rains, gravity and wind-driven rain will push water up and under that shingle. At FCB, our digital inspections involve physically checking the bond of the sealant strips to ensure your “armor” is actually attached to the house.
When wind lifts a shingle repeatedly but doesn’t tear it off, it creates a “crease” near the top of the shingle where it meets the roofing nails.
This crease is a permanent stress fracture in the fiberglass matting. Even if the shingle looks like it’s laying flat, the structural integrity is gone. Eventually, the shingle will snap off entirely, but by the time that happens, the wood decking underneath has likely already been exposed to moisture for months. We look for these faint horizontal lines during our inspections to identify roofs that are at risk of total failure during the next wind event.
While everyone focuses on the shingles, the metal flashing and rubber pipe boots are often where storms do the most damage.
High winds can vibrate metal flashing (the metal around your chimney and valleys), breaking the caulking or sealant. In the Baton Rouge humidity, that broken seal becomes a highway for moisture. Additionally, hail can crack the plastic or rubber “boots” that surround your plumbing vents. If these aren’t caught immediately, you will deal with “phantom leaks” that only appear during heavy, sideways rain.
